Local Attractions
The Local Area
Dartmoor. Purple, heather-clad moorland, wide-open landscapes, rushing rivers and obscure stone tors shape the landscape of Dartmoor. But that is just one small part of a big picture. There are rolling valleys, bogs and wetland, waterfalls and well-trodden paths, ancient, eery forests and lonely ruins. Sometimes ominous, challenging, extreme, sometimes welcoming, heartwarming; always breathtaking, always changing, the landscape of Dartmoor is alive in every sense of the word.
Modbury is a delightful town in South Hams, close to the South Devon coastline, surrounded by rolling hills, wooded glades and winding country lanes, where visitors will find a cluster of independent shops, cafes and locally produced Devon food and drink. Local farms sell fresh local produce, as well as a local vineyard and a chocolate maker. The closest local garage and shop at California Cross, about 2 miles away.
The local area is blessed with excellent pubs, particularly The Ship Inn in Ugborough and the Royal Oak in Bigbury, which are our favourite places to eat.
Activities. There are lovely sandy beaches at Bigbury-on-Sea, just 3 miles to the south. Other good beaches include Mothecombe, Bantham, Thurlestone and Challaborough Bay, which are all popular with families, offering a range of water sports in the summer and surfing and sea kayaking continues throughout the year. Horse riding is available locally and, for golfers, there are two good golf clubs nearby. There is excellent fly fishing and coarse fishing available in the area. There is much to do and see in this area, with something to suit family members of all ages. Alternatively, guests will be pleased to simply just stay put at Coombe Barns and enjoy a totally relaxing holiday spending quality time together as a family.
